Premium Sports Funding

What is Primary Physical Education and Sports Premium Funding?

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum  in order to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is being provided jointly by the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport.

How much funding is available?

Funding during each academy year varies. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. Detailed below is a record of Premium Sports Funding from 2013-2017.

In previous years our funding was used  to subsidise year 6 sailing courses and ran canoe taster sessions for year 5. Outdoor activities on the year 6 extended visit were also supported by the funding. A number of outside coaches worked alongside teachers in curriculum time to up level their skills. Sports covered included football, cricket, basketball, handball ,trigolf and tennis. We also had Skip2bfit workshops for both KS1 and KS2 and focused on improving fitness and mental maths skills. A Change4Life club was also funded and a new dance scheme of work bought in with interactive, online resources. Training was also provided for all staff.

At Holland Park Primary our aim is to use the Sports Premium Funding to provide a range of outside agencies to work alongside our teachers. We have had coaches in football, rugby, basketball, dance, cricket, tennis and netball working with the children.  We also aim to support and engage all children through arranging additional new and free clubs.  The year 6 sailing courses continue to be subsidised. Alongside this the funding will be used to purchase quality assured professional development modules and materials for PE and sport.

How will we measure the impact?

During the academic year we will continue to monitor the progress of all pupils through teacher assessments each term, pupil questionnaires and lesson observations. This will inform future decisions about PE and sport provision at Holland Park Primary.

P.E. and sport premium funding for Primary Schools 2013/2014

The government sports premium funding of £9,820  was used in the following ways at Holland Park in this year:

  • Sports coaches in cricket, football, basketball, handball and tennis have been bought in to work alongside teachers to uplevel their skills.
  • Year 5 pupils had free taster sessions in canoeing at Alton Water. This then led to courses being offered to pupils at Clacton Leisure Centre.
  • Year 6 have had the cost of their sailing courses subsidised by the funding.
  • We bought in a new dance scheme called imovesdance.com and booked CPD training for all the staff. This resource has proved to be extremely popular with both staff and students. We have a 3 year licence.
  • A new portable sound system was purchased to be used outside for Sports Day/cross-country events and enable the imoves dance resources to be used simultaneously in both indoor halls.
  • Skip2bfit workshops were booked for both KS2 and KS1. Equipment was bought in for all the children and inter-class competition developed.
  • A box2bfit workshop was booked for KS2 and appropriate resources bought. We now have a permanent indoor circuit that can be used by the whole of KS2.
  • A Change4life club was set up for year 4. Resources were purchased and training given to staff. This was a lunchtime club.
  • Year 6 pupils had a series of Trigolf lessons in curriculum time. This led to the school winning the Trigolf Schools Project Finals.
  • Funding was also put towards the cost of some of the outdoor and adventurous activities on the year 6 extended visit to Broad Haven in South Wales.
  • The cost of an advanced tennis coaching course was subsidised for those children taking part.
  • A ‘gifted and talented’ tennis day was organised at Prested Hall for year 5 pupils. They had coaching in lawn tennis and had ‘taster’ sessions in real tennis!

We have greatly benefited from the premium sports funding and look forward to extending further the range of opportunities and activities that we can offer in the future.
