Art & Design

Our Art & Design Vision: Creativity and Expression

At Holland Park, we value Art and Design as a vital subject that allows children to express their individual creativity and develop a strong understanding of art's role in human history and culture. We encourage children to experiment, create, and invent their own works of art.

How Your Child Learns Art

Our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced, and deeply connected to other subjects to make learning engaging and relevant.

Skills and Technique Progression

  • Skill Development: Children are given opportunities to explore and use a variety of media and materials (paints, pencils, clay, etc.).

  • Technique Mastery: They are taught to progressively develop their control and use of materials, building upon skills and techniques year after year (tracked on our progression maps).

  • Experimentation: Students are encouraged to experiment and develop their techniques individually and collaboratively.

Artists, History, and Culture

  • Inspiration: We encourage pupils to investigate specific techniques and methods of historical figures and artists.

  • Cultural Knowledge: The curriculum helps children understand the impact art has on shaping human history and the link between creative arts and the cultural wealth of nations.

  • Investigate and Evaluate: Each art project requires children to investigate, understand, experiment, and evaluate a particular artist's method, considering its wider influence.

Curriculum Structure

  • Integrated Learning: Art lessons are planned to link directly to the year group's topic or "driver subject" for the term, ensuring learning is cohesive and meaningful.

  • Projects: Children complete a minimum of three art projects per academic year, each linked to the current theme.

  • Vocabulary: We focus on teaching the key artistic vocabulary relevant to the techniques and themes being studied.

In short, your child will be challenged, inspired, and equipped with the techniques and cultural understanding needed to be a confident and creative artist.
