Design & Technology
Our D&T Vision: Designing and Making for Purpose
At Holland Park, we believe Design & Technology is a crucial subject that equips children with the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed for an increasingly technological world. Students will be dedicated to designing and making high-quality products with a clear purpose and user in mind.
What Your Child Will Learn
Our D&T curriculum focuses on a continuous process of designing, making, and evaluating, incorporating technical and creative skills.
Key Practical Skills
-
Designing: Building a repertoire of knowledge and skills to design and make products. Designs will show individuality, and children will be encouraged to make ongoing changes and improvements during the making stages.
-
Making: Developing the technical and practical expertise needed to create high-quality prototypes and products.
-
Evaluating: Learning to critique, evaluate, and test both their own ideas and products, and the work of others. Evidence of this process is collected through drawings, evaluations, and photos.
Food Technology & Nutrition
-
Cooking: Children will be taught to cook and apply the principles of nutrition.
-
Ingredients: They will learn about the seasonality of ingredients and how they are grown, caught, or reared.
Historical Context
-
Key Figures: In Key Stage 2, pupils will research key events and individual designers in the history of technology to contextualise their learning.
Cross-Curricular Projects
-
Integrated Learning: D&T projects will be taught through at least two projects per year and are often cross-curricular, linking to other subjects taught (e.g., writing instructions for a product).
Technology Challenges
-
Parent Involvement: To promote engagement, various year groups will have the opportunity to participate in "Technology Challenges" (e.g., marshmallow/spaghetti tower, balloon stacking) in school time with their parents.
