Our Spanish Vision: Global Curiosity
At Holland Park, we teach Spanish to foster your child's curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our aim is to give pupils the skills to express themselves creatively and explore their own culture alongside those of others, instilling a sense of enjoyment, pride, and achievement in language learning.
How Your Child Will Learn Spanish
Our language teaching is designed to lay strong foundations in all four key language skills, using a professional scheme of work and dedicated lesson time.
Early Exposure (EYFS & KS1)
-
Informal Introduction: While formal lessons don't begin until KS2, adults in the classroom use basic Spanish instructions and vocabulary for familiar objects. This helps children develop early language acquisition skills and recognise language patterns.
Formal Lessons (KS2)
-
Dedicated Time: Every class in Key Stage 2 has a timetabled 30-minute Spanish lesson per week.
-
Four Skills: Lessons support the balanced development of the four key skills:
-
Speaking
-
Listening and Responding (e.g., joining in with songs, rhymes, and games)
-
Reading and Responding
-
Writing
-
Curriculum and Progression
-
Scheme of Work: We follow the Language Angels scheme of work, which ensures the knowledge and skills are progressive from one year to the next.
-
Cultural Appreciation: Children develop an appreciation of a variety of stories, songs, poems, and rhymes in Spanish. We also celebrate languages through varied experiences and connections with native Spanish speakers.
-
Future Links: The teaching of Spanish lays the foundation for learning further languages in secondary school (KS3) and accessing international opportunities later in life.
In short, your child will be a well-rounded language learner, gaining the skills to communicate in Spanish, build cultural awareness, and develop a genuine curiosity about the world.
