Our Music Vision: A Love for Listening and Performing

At Holland Park, we offer a broad and balanced music curriculum that ensures every child gains a firm understanding of music. We aim to promote a love of music and singing and ensure children understand its value in the wider community and for their own well-being.

How Your Child Will Learn Music

We use the Sing Up Music scheme of work to ensure high-quality teaching, progressive skills, and exposure to a wide variety of music.

Active Engagement

Children are provided opportunities to engage with music practically through the core skills of:

  • Listening and Appreciating

  • Singing (in class and weekly singing assemblies)

  • Playing (instruments)

  • Composing

  • Evaluating and Analysing

Sing Up Music covers a broad and diverse range of repertoire, approaches, and musical traditions, It supports a fully-integrated approach to musical development, connecting the interrelated strands of singing, playing, improvising, composing, listening, and appraising.

  • Instrumental Teaching: All pupils are offered peripatetic music lessons. This is through iRock which is available for the whole school.

  • Specialist Instruction: Pupils in Key Stage 2 receive specialist teaching on an instrument (e.g., Ukulele Play-it! sessions in Year 4).

  • Extra-Curricular: We offer exciting extra-curricular opportunities, such as the ‘iRock School of Music’ where "mini bands" learn to play and perform their chosen instruments. We also have our very own ‘Singing Club’ where members have the opportunity to sing in a group and perform throughout the year.

Showcase and Community

  • School Events: Children participate in opportunities to demonstrate their love of music and showcase their skills through school productions and participation in local music festivals (including working with the Essex Music Hub and iRock).

  • Progressive Learning: Lessons are designed to build on previous learning, ensuring skills and knowledge in performing and appreciating music are continuously developed.

In short, your child will be a well-rounded musician who is actively singing, playing, composing, and appreciating a wide range of musical styles, fostering a lifelong love of music.
