RE
Our RE Vision: Understanding and Respecting Faiths
At Holland Park we follow the Kapow Primary Religion & Worldviews curriculum, which helps children learn about different religions, beliefs and ways of seeing the world. The aim is to help pupils understand others, think for themselves, and develop respect and empathy for people from all backgrounds.
What Your Child Will Learn
Through RE, children explore well-known world religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism, as well as non-religious worldviews like Humanism. They learn through stories, celebrations, special objects, discussion, questioning and real-life examples.
Kapow’s approach is very child-friendly and encourages pupils to ask “big questions”, for example:
-
What does it mean to belong?
-
How should we treat others?
-
What makes someone who they are?
The curriculum is taught in a spiral way, meaning children revisit key ideas as they grow older, increasing their confidence and deepening their understanding each year. Lessons are practical, engaging, and designed so every child can participate.
Core Knowledge
Overall, our RE curriculum helps pupils:
-
Learn about different beliefs and traditions
-
Understand similarities and differences between people
-
Develop their own thinking, values and sense of identity
-
Become thoughtful, respectful and open-minded young citizens
Learning Methods
-
Dedicated Time: RE is taught in standalone lessons (a minimum of 60-75 minutes per week equivalent).
-
Real-World Experience: We make learning concrete by using relevant artefacts, media, and visits to places of worship (e.g., the local church).
-
Celebrating Diversity: We consider the faith backgrounds of our pupils to ensure we help them celebrate their key festivals. We use performances related to religious stories, like the KS1 Nativity and KS2 Carol Concert.
Values and Skills
-
Curiosity and Reflection: We provide open-ended tasks to encourage a range of responses, helping children to reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences, fostering a sense of awe, wonder, and mystery.
-
Respect: Staff and pupils are expected to consistently model and demonstrate respect and open-mindedness to ensure barriers and misconceptions about different faiths are broken down.
